antohins (2005-present)
Knowing how long it takes to put together pages of the family past, this page is at the very beginning of the journey back into my Russian history -- Anatoly's MyStory. There are photos to scan, documents to type -- most likely it will take YEARS. This is the only "geneology" page on my Russin website and the only hope I have that the children or their children will work more on it. "Американские Антохины" -- это не Антохины.Россия Антохиных -- вот она, приехали. Это если вы раньше не поняли, чье время настало.On my father' side there were ten children, on my mother's -- four. Only one of them still has the name Antohin -- me.anatoly.orgBorn and raised in Moscow, I defected in 1980 at age of 31 ... and it's unlikely I will die in Russia.
We came back to Russia in 1992 for two years with the children (on Fulbright scholarship) and you can read about it at Russian American Theatre project. It didn't work...
That was the second time I left Russia -- more is in "Father Russia" manuscript.
What didn't it work? I don't know. I became a member of the Soviet Writers Guild at age 26, but I do not write in Russian anymore.
At age 50 and almost 20 years in US it is too late ask questions about the facts of your own biography....
The Russians of the family:
My father, Georgy, and mother Lidia (Jiryakova).
Grandfather Iosif (Osip) and grandmother Malania -- on father's side.
Mother's: Ivan and Olga.
Great-grandfather (Malania's father) -- Ivan Moroz
( "Морозята" )
The name. Antohin (Antoxin, X in Russian, which should be spelled "kh" like in Chekhov) is from the Greek "Antioch" (I should say the Byzantine is its origins, like Anatoly).[ music ]It's unlikely I can get further back than my great-grandfathers; the rest is more like family legends.
According to those stories, my mother's line comes from the North (Novgorod) and my father's -- from Ryasyan' (south of Moscow). My grandfather Osip came to Moscow after the revolution, civil war and Stalin's war on Russian peasantry.
My father loved to tell the saga of the rise of his grandfather to a wealthy farmer with many hourses and mills -- that was the reason why the NKVD (more known as KGB) came after him. After several years of the bush fighting the army, most of the males were executed -- and my grandmother, Malania, ran to Moscow, where she met my grandfather, Osip, who served his time in the Soviet army fighting "the enemis of the people" like his wife's father.
Osip was with the Bolshevicks in St. Petersburg and took part in looting the Winter Palace. His reolutionary past didn't do him much good, but we had several good books he stole from what is today Hermitage.
The origins of my father and my mother were obvious for any Russian: platinum blonde hair and blue eyes of the Russians (or Scandinavians), never mixed with the Tartars and my father's dark hair and green eyes.
Since my grandmother Olga was very millitant in spirit, she would bring this difference over and over to drive my father crazy.
Poor soul, she did't live to see her African grandchldren. Her pride was based on the old Russian class structure -- the Antohins were peasants, rich or poor, it didn't matter. Her husband (another Ivan) was from the long dynasty of the merchants and he managed the biggest store in Moscow, the Eliseev's, even under the Soviets.
He died young and left Olga with three daugthers and son to manage.
"Книга Антохиных" -- не книга. Антохины книг не пишут. Писать про Антохиных не для кого. Антохины книг не читают.
Какие там проспекты, мосты и дворцы -- Кремль!
